in theory ANYTHING based on the bt878 / bt848 chipsets should be generically supported under linux.

Incidentally i bought a wintv GO!!!!!!!! [sick] card and it always spluttered and screwed up under windows, works like an absolute gem under linux from day one.

oh yeah, avoid ati's wonder cards... too much hassle, no bt878... (room for error of course... only what i'm using to hearing about...)

the MSI card that im thinking of right now is based on the

conexant : CX23881 chipset

does any1 know if this is supported under linux?

if not... i think i will have to settle for the more expensive

HAUPPAUGE 404 WIN-TV-125 ($125 canadian not including shipping and taxes)

compared to

MSI TV@nywhere TV Tuner PCI w/ remote $82 Canadian

well that card you suggested isn't 878 or 848 based, so i wouldn't touch it. you seriously can't find a card cheaper than that?? what's wrong with a cheap little wintv go? doesn't have a remote i guess... but yeah just make sure it's got a brooktree chip in it and you *should* be fine, brand names will still help though. if you look in the right place ni teh kernel sources you'll get this list...

pretty damn good really. There are some little niggles with using tv cards in terms of quality, but then these are typicaly very similar to the problems in watching digital tv in general. updating sometimes leaves a little to desire, but i generally prefer it to normal tv. sharper picture etc... and of course with programs like mencoder (and gui based things like freevo, which uses mencoder) recording to disk is a doddle.
