Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

radeon 9700 pro. Open source drivers vs fglrx+old x.org desktop. Faster or slower?

I'm wondering if someone can provide a recent benchmark or a link to one using a radeon 9700 pro with the open source drivers.

I think it'd be worth just using the open source drivers either way but maybe not.

So are the latest fglrx drivers (with old x.org server) for the radeon 9700 pro faster than the current open source drivers? Are there still features missing?

It'd be interested in benchmarks using mostly doom 3, quake 4 and/or nexuiz. Maybe quake 3 but preferably not. Even better if there's recent benchmarks with windows xp drivers vs the linux open source drivers on older hardware. Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry for the trouble but could a mod move this to the appropriate forum (perhaps hardware forum?) thanks.

Hi, using a radeon 9700, you're stuck with the opensource drivers, if don't you want to use an old usersdpace (X.org ...) because AMD decided to drop support for pre r600 (HD series) cards in their fglrx driver. However, here are the benchmarks you asked for.

Have fun, Serafean
