Question Problem with setting up a network printer in linux

Hello, I have a HP officejet printer connected to one of my computer which is running Windows XP SP1. I have another computer with Red Hat Linux 9.0 installed. i connected these two computers via NIC cards, and they both can ping each other. i shared my printer in WIN XP environment, and I followed the normal printer configuration step in linux to setup the HP printer remotely in linux. in the setup wizzard, i can successfully view the shared printer, but i cannot go to the next step, since everytime i click the proceed button, it pops up a dialog box asking for username and password. i tried all the possible username/password combinations, both in linux and in windows, but the dialog keeps poping up and i cannot go to the next stage.

What was going wrong there???

Thanks for any help!

This sounds like Windows is set up for User based access control and SAMBA is set up for Share based access control. I have had a very similar problem (the other way round though) and ths was the reason. It could also be due to an incorrect encrypt passwords setting.

Yes, try changing the SAMBA configuration (with Webmin,SWAT, or a text editor as you wish) and set the access permissions to agree with the XP machine. Alternatively set the XP machine's settings to match the SAMBA configuration. If you want to use User based access permissions then one of the machines will need to be told to retrieve it's User/Group list from the other machine. Which computer stores the User/Group list should be irrelevant however I have never worked with XP before.
