I've got a rhel 5 that has no X installed so I'm not able to get into the cups webui. I add printers with lpadmin. I'll admit, linux printing is not a strength of mine.
To add a printer I use
Code:
lpadmin -p <name> -E -v socket://<ip address>:9100 -P <path to ppd>
If I don't have the ppd file we try not specifying one
Code:
lpadmin -p <name> -E -v socket://<ip address>:9100
If this doesn't work I use the text only ppd, which so far has not failed me.
Code:
lpadmin -p <name> -E -v socket://<ip address>:9100 -P usr/share/cups/model/textonly.ppd
We now have office jet pro 8600's in the mix. I can't find a ppd that works, so I use the textonly.pdd. This is fine until we try to resize text. If we print using 'lp' the use a switch of '-o cpi=15' it seems this switch is ignored. My test machine is centos 6, and I notice in the cups setup that I can choose an 8600. I've found in /usr/share/ppd/HP/ there is a hp-officejet_pro_8000_enterprise_a811a-ps.ppd.gz
My questions are:
1. should I quit messing around and configure the cups webui to be accessible from anywhere?
2. Should I copy over this ppd for the 8600 and test it? are these ppd.gz's unzipped and used during a cups webui install?
3. Is there a universal hp ppd that supports the "-o cpi=N" switch that I just haven't found?
4.For some reason in the back of my head I remember reading that restarting cups removes all printers and re-adds them, rebuilding the printers.conf file. Is this even true? Is there any danger of losing a printer restarting cups?
5. Any other general printing advice would be appreciated.
