The phone has to be already in Advanced mode before you connect to computer.
It says after you connect the phone to computer, change the settings of the phone using the phones UI

aAlready in advanced mode, USB "Ask", what menu section of the phone, "Connectivity"? Change that to "External Storage" or similar?
Here's output of "dmesg|tail" now:
[ 1442.040435] usb 2-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[ 1442.040440] usb 2-1.2: Product: PANTECH USB DRIVER
[ 1442.040444] usb 2-1.2: Manufacturer: PANTECH
[ 1442.069345] usbcore: registered new interface driver qcaux
[ 1442.069374] USB Serial support registered for qcaux
[ 1442.069398] qcaux 2-1.2:1.2: qcaux converter detected
[ 1442.069872] usb 2-1.2: qcaux converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[ 1442.070805] cdc_acm 2-1.2:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
[ 1442.072165] usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_acm
[ 1442.072168] cdc_acm: USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters

still indicating a modem, a USB modem. But now what's that "ISDN adapters" ??
"fdisk -l" still does not recognize a new storage device.

Yes, SD card installed. Has pictures on it taken by the camera. And some of my music. Works pretty good.

Got the D-Link bluetooth USB dongle, dmesg|tail looks good until I tried to add a file from the phone to the computer even though no file systems had been mounted, at that point it spit out the last line. I had already got the system to recognize the D-Link, the Pantech P000 recocognized the bluetooth dongle. But there was a small question mark on the "device" icon on the phone that made me wonder. Not the right kind of connection is being made there although I don't think it ever will. Anyway I have a bluetooth dongle, it will probably hang around until it becomes obsolete.
Here's the output of "dmesg | tail":
[ 3515.784145] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c05 tx timeout
[ 3516.788098] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0c01 tx timeout

[ 3518.798149] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x080f tx timeout

[ 3583.273466] usb 2-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=0a12, idProduct=0001
[ 3583.273473] usb 2-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0

Updated libQt and installed pybluez, there's a system tray icon now I can click on and exchange files back and forth between the laptop and the Pantech P2000. So a measure of success with bluetooth file file transfer. It's iffy though, sometimes it loses connection and it's reboot everything, although I'm not sure why that would be necessary, it seems just unplugging the D-Link dongle and plugging back in or rebooting the phone should do but it's like jumping through hoops at times. Nice to know it can be done, though. I'm going to mark this thread SOLVED. Thanks to all. Especially michaelk!
