Unhappy Palm Tungsten with RedHat 9.0

Could anyone give any advice about getting the Tungsten T to work with anything in linux. I am new to linux and have no clue where to begin, I do not even know where inthe /dev/ dir that the USB cradle shows up onder, maybe that is my only problem. I have seen a lot of articles about hacking Gnome Pilot, but that was with 8.0. If anyone could help, I am very open to ideas. I just do not wat to spend the $30-$40 on a serial cradle when I am sure Linux can conquer all.

Thanks,
Tim

Read this discussion. I believe I answered some questions about how to fix it there...

First off you will have check what kernel version you have (this is done by doing "uname -r" in terminal). It is required that you have at least >=2.4.20. If you don't have a the latest kernel there are two options:
1. Either you download the latest kernel (actually 2.4.20 is a prerelease but I believe that there shouldn't be any problems with it).
2. Or you recompile your own kernel, doing the appropriate changes according to this page (or you might aswell download 2.4.19 and compile).

If you do have a good kernel you will have to load the "visor"-module in your kernel (this is done by su:ing and then using "insmod" to load the module). Probably you will also have to load some other module to get it working (me for instance had to load "usbserial" aswell).

Why upgrading your kernel when the visor module exists in them all? Well, the visor module, which is used to communicate with your Tungsten doesn't have the fingerprint of the Tungsten T (which makes it impossible for the module to recognize the Tungsten).

After loading that module (or after you've compiled it into your kernel, however I wouldn't suggest that) you will then need to download the pilot-link package (either as RPM or you may also download, compile and install by yourself).
Then you'll have to choose a GUI and my suggestion is that you use "jpilot" (which you'll have to download separately) which I am using as it works perfectly although I have not got my mail going yet.

If you get mail running on your Tungsten I'd be happy if you tell me how to do it.

Regards,
Jens

Talking excellent

Okay, I did everything. I have kernel version 2.4.30.9. I installed visor and usbserial. Then I downloaded the pilot-link 0.11.7 and compiled and installed it. I checked visor.c and it has the tungsten code inside it. This is farther than I have ever gotten thus far. Now, forgive my stupidity, but what do i put in jpilot under preferences/setting/serial port to get it to sync? Thanks so much for your help.

Tim

Hmm, I don't think that's really the kernel version you have as that version doesn't exist (check www.kernel.org) however it doesn't matter as long as you have the latest visor module installed and working.

The serial port in jpilot should be "/dev/pilot".

I hope this'll work.

Jens
