Onboard via8233 crackling

I've always had problems with this soundcard on my laptop, but they always seemed to resolve themselves after a few minutes of opening and closing multimedia files. As of today though, following a long list of autoupgrades (to Gutsy) the problem seems to have become permanent.

I don't know enough about sound to know where to begin fixing this.

It doesn't crackle reading a file recorded at 8kHz but does hum, crackle and spit like morse code at 44kHz, I've noticed
