nvidia recommendations.

I've been using GeForce 7600GT for the last 4-5 years. I'm running Slackware64 13.1 on a 24'' monitor. It works fine. No complaints. Now, my father's card seems to have packed up so I'll probably use this opportunity to give him my card and get myself a new one

Can anyone recommend some good Nvidia card costing up to £100/$120?

Thank you for any answers.

NVIDIA GeForce GTS250 512MB PCI-E
its 130 quid from maplins, but the small amount extra is really worth it.

quite helpful for you to think about is how good your power supply is (our computers power supply wasnt powerful enough for the GPU)
some stats for you:

* Full Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 support
* NVIDIA® PhysX™ Technology
* PCI-Express 2.0 interface
* 512MB GDDR3 graphics memory
* 250 stream processors
* 256 bit memory bus
* Maximum resolution: 2560 x 1600
* Nvidia® SLI™
* 128-bit floating point High Dynamic-Range

Thanks, it's acutally £92 from ebuyer.com

I should be fine when it comes to PSU. I've got 500W - it should be fine. Last time I did some approximation on the existing hardware, it came up as something just under 200W (if I remember correctly).

Are you into gaming ? On window$ or Linux ?

I would get a GeForce 9800 GT.

I have a GeForce 8800 GTS 512, but it seems to be considerably more expensive.

Yeah, sometimes I do some linux FPS sessions. The only other thing is I do a lot of image processing (RAW), but I'm not sure if it's relevant here.

I recently purchased a GT-240 with 1 Gig memory for $110. It uses less power than the 7800GS it replaces and its performance is much better. I'm not a gamer so I don't know how it would do in a gaming environment, but it scores a 5.3 in the Windows 7 performance metric "Business 3-D and Gaming Graphics performance" metric, for my Win7 installation which runs as a virtual machine in VMware Workstation 7 hosted in my Linux workstation. I presume its native performance would be somewhat better, but that ain't bad.

It does about 5500 FPS using glxgears in my fully loaded KDE4 environment with a Phenom-II 955 quad core processor (and VMware workstation running with 2 virtual machines - including Win7 - up and running). I've tried glxgears on a minimal desktop and I don't remember the score but something like 30K fps.

As you found a cheaper GTS250, get that one, it's slightly better.

Thanks guys, I think I'll take GTS250. One more question. Are there any other reasons (apart from gaming) for getting a good gfx card? I mean, if you don't play games or work with Blender, is the money spent on a better gfx card wasted money?

You can play say 720p or 1080p video, assuming you have a monitor that is that big so you can enjoy it. Really anything 8000 series and up which have vdpau should be able to play them.

There's no other reason besides games and other 3d rendering.

Yes, my monitor supports 1080p.

While now I need to buy a card, I might as well buy something relatively good. Perhaps next year they'll release: Nethack ultimate SuperTurbo PowerGfx Extreme 3D-experience HD Edition
Thanks
