Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

nvidia driver

Hi guys,
Although I know how to get TV-out to work, I can't get the resolution or rather the screen size right. Does anyone know how exactly the metamodes option works becuse it seems to me that in a line eg
Code:
Option "Metamodes" "1280x1024,1074x768"
the second resolution is the amount of the first resolution to display.
So if I have like above the TV shows 1074 pixels along the 1280 and likewise for the height resulting in a partial desktop on the tv.
I used to have this working perfectly with the nv driver before I found out about nvidias own driver. (only problem was poor performance).
Ok so what I have tried so far is including
Code:
 1280x1024,1280x1024;1280x1024,1024x768 etc
but the mere mention of 1280x1024,1280x1024 causes a system hang at startup meaning I have to boot into runlevel 3 to continue.
I tried
Code:
1024x768,1024x768;1024x768,800x600.....
but that means the tv works but the monitor doesn't.
This is driving me crazy. Please can you either tell me what is wrong with my xorg.conf or post yours if it works so I can use it as a start point
