Not enough fps on Radeon 9600 mobility

Hi. Im running debian, with a selfcompiled kernel 2.6.7. I have installed fglrx from the ATI site. However I have a problem with the computer freezing playing opengl games.

At the same time it seems that I cant get enough fps in glxgears. And the games play laggy when a lot of things happens at the same time (Warcraft 3).

araldit@laptop:~$ glxgears
3695 frames in 5.0 seconds = 739.000 FPS
4393 frames in 5.0 seconds = 878.600 FPS
4386 frames in 5.0 seconds = 877.200 FPS
4395 frames in 5.0 seconds = 879.000 FPS

araldit@laptop:~$ dmesg | grep agp

I don't know about WarCraft but NwN isn't giving me an acceptable performance on a 9700 Mobility card.

Perhaps the ATI Linux drivers just suck? I hope not though...

Cool

I think those drivers suck. I have been messing around for quite a while, but doesn't give me any good readings. I have a riva tnt2 ultra, which gives almost as much, but it is ofcouse 4 years older.

Anyone with good readings using radeon 9600???

I have a Radeon 9600 Mobility running fglrx 3.11.1 aswell, and my glxgears yields about 1200fps. This is actually very low, I used to get over 2000 on 3.9.0.

On the up side, the new drivers fix a problem with the compiled vertex arrays :-) so things like ut2k4 work now.

But my biggest problem with them is that somehow broke my OpenGL/SDL apps. I get a segfault when my program tries to do a SDL_SetVideoMode().

If you try going to http://nehe.gamedev.net and download one of the openGL/SDL demo's, build and run I would really like to know if you have the same problem?

my glxinfo is different to yours, and to tell the truth, I think mine might be wrong... vendor string of SGI??? I am running SuSE 9.1 and installed using the SuSE provided rpm's.

I have the exact same problem, my Frame drops from around 2000 to 1200. I manage to gain a little more after choosing the fastest method during fglrxconfig, instead of compatibility.

This morning I tried downloading the OpenGL demo Andreas Hammar from the Site you specified, and it worked like a charm. I did however launch it with winx3, wine, and cedega. How do I compile it myself. I guess I need something, to be able to do that.

Well anyone know how we can get ATI to work as good as NVIDIA, or at least close to.

Araldit, did you compare your glxinfo against the ones posted above? Does yours say SGI or ATI as renderer?

What you downloaded was the compiled windows version... ok, I am going to quickly hack together an OpenGL test app and stick on the net somewhere so people can d/l and have a test, maybe get it to log out some stuff etc just so we all have something to compare against and see if they all die during the OpenGL init.

Ok, I just quickly built this app it segfaults in the middle of the SDL OpenGL mode switch, so it is not going to be a lot of use, other than to see if everyone on the 3.11.1 driver has the same problem.

Go to burkeez.com/bench/benchthis.tar.gz and untar it, then run the program, it it not exciting ok.. it was only just done tonight and has very little in it, but might one day be an OpenGL benchmark and demo for Linux and maybe OSX etc.

araldit, do you get the same scores in glxgears if you run it as root (logged in as root)?
