Also note that manufacturers often change the chipset and then just change the revision number on the device (rather than change the model) even though the later chipset is 100% incompatible. So you need to use 'lspci' (or lsusb for USB devices) to discover the VendorID:ProductID of the wireless chipset and verify that the guides you look at are in fact talking about the chipset that you have. If they're talking about different chipsets, at least you can use the VendorID:ProductID to help you find info on what driver to use.
