No SPDIF/TOSLINK output on ALC-887-VD

Hi,

I have an ASUS A88M-plus motherboard with an ALC887-VD audio chipset.
This supports an SPDIF output addon board connected to pins on the motherboard. I connected the board (All 3 pins: +5V, gnd and data), but am unable to get any digital audio output. The TOSLINK connector doesn't even light up.
In the BIOS/UEFI, the digital output type is set to SPDIF.

Any ideas?

I take it you know it will only light up when sound is being played?

It should light up when the output is activated. (Tested on another PC -- different card: muting the SPDIF output turns it off, unmuting turns it on). And I did spend an evening with aplay trying different output devices. I'm pretty confident it should've lit up.
