You have to load a kernel module for the hardware before you can configure your network.

Well, depending on what kernel your running you might already have a module for the nforce nic, do (as root) "modinfo forcedeth" and if it returns the following you can load the module with "modprobe forcedeth"
Code:
bern@beast:~$ su -c 'modinfo forcedeth'
Password:
filename: /lib/modules/2.4.26/kernel/drivers/net/forcedeth.o
description: "Reverse Engineered nForce ethernet driver"
author: "Manfred Spraul <manfred@colorfullife.com>"
license: "GPL"
parm: max_interrupt_work int, description "forcedeth maximum events handled per interrupt"
If on the other hand you get the following message,
Code:
bern@beast:~$ su -c 'modinfo forcedeth'
Password:
modinfo: forcedeth: no module by that name found
Then we need to install a module, which can be either the nvnet module from nvidias nforce driver or we can upgrade your kernel to a version that contains the forcedeth driver.
To check what kernel version your running do "uname -r".

When I do the 'modinfo forcedeth' command it returns the message: modinfo: forcedeth: no module by that name found. What would be my next step from here.

Mike

p.s. Thanks alot for all your time and patience Aussie with this newbie.

The next step is up to you, I would recomend upgrading your kernel, but it would be easier to install the nvnet module, however I have heard mixed reports on how well the nvnet modules works.

Make sure the cable is plugged in to the right jack!

Well I've just decided to scrap this version of Linux. I was running Slackware 9.0 but when trying to download the nvidia all in one driver they only had support for the red hat, debian, mandrake and suse distros. There is more support for red hat and hopefully (cross my fingers) it will detect my network card.

I'm wondering though if there isn't another problem though. My firewire always detects as a network connection. Maybe I should disable this in the Bios before an install. If anyone knows/thinks this could be a solution to my problems let me know.

Just put the firewire net module in /etc/hotplug/blacklist to stop it from loading, and the nvidia driver will install on slackware 9.0, I've had it installed on 9.0, 9.1 and current - once you run the installer it will prompt you to build a new kernel module if it cannot find a match.

It may already have been stated in this thread that you should use the nforce drivers that you can download from nvidia's web site.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0301.html

Before you can use drivers such as these you need to download and install the kernel source so that the installer can make a kernel module. I wouldn't count on installing both nics from that installer. You may have to just use one (the nvidia one would be my preference).
