network/ethernet printer

I want to get a low-end monochrome laser network/ethernet printer.

I was looking at the HP1300n:
http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/h...ABA&catLevel=3
LinuxPrinting.org shows a driver for the HP1300, but not specifically the 'n':
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...-LaserJet_1300

How can I determine if the 'n' will work with a Linux box?

Any recommendations of other printers?

network printer

If HP is consistant, the n indicates that the printer has a network card built in.

If this is the case, setting it up using CUPS should be a snap.

I have a HP2200dn and it was indead a simple process to get it working.

Can you explain how to setup a network printer using CUPS?
I have Webmin and I'm not sure what boxes to fill in, which to check, etc.
For example, for Print destination, I need to check one of these radio button selections and then fill in a text box next to it:

Local device
Local file
Remote Unix server
Direct TCP connection
Remote Windows server

HP1300n

Hello allelopath

To set up a HP1300n on my Slackware box, I would do the following. With the network connected to both the Linux box and the printer, and after having run the setup stuff for the printer to give it an IP address.

In a web browser enter http://localhost:631/printers

This brings up the CUPS administration screen. (Gota have CUPS installed first to do this.)

Click Add Printer

This brings up where you enter Username: root and Password: (roots password)

Next screen wants you to give the printer a Name, Location and Description

Next screen asks for Device: AppSocket/ HP JetDirect

Next Screen Device UrI: socket://IP_address_you_gave_printer:9100

Next Screen choose the Make: HP

Next choose the model: HP laserjet 1300 Foomatic/hpijs(en)

This takes you back to the admin screen where you can click printers and see your printer and print a test page

All of this I learned through trial and error and reading lots of posts on Linux Qusetions

Good Luck
