Need help with configuring ATI drivers

Hello,

I need help configuring ATI drivers on my laptop, im using fedora core 6.

So i installed ATi video drivers on the laptop by way of the following commands using root

rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-6.rpm
yum install kmod-fglrx

I typed
aticonfig
and set up the initial configuration by way of

aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

restarted FC

and it never booted to the GUI, instead it booted to an error...

Failed to start the X server (your graphical
interface). It is likely that it is not set
up correctly. Would you like to view the X
server output to diagnose the problem?

When i choose yes get the following...

X Windows System Version 7.1.1
Release Dage: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision , Release 7.1.1
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.9-34.ELsmp i686 Red Dat, Inc.
Current Operating System: Linux localhost.localdomain
2.6.17-1.2895fc6xen #1 SMP Wed Jan 10 19:47:12 EST 2007 i686
Build Date: 04 October 2006
Build ID: xorg-x11-server 1.1.1-47.fc6

Ive since booted to the GUI using a default xorg.conf, it was an option i was given, how do i properly configure these drivers, id like to use the 3d desktop and im hoping installing and configuring the drivers will make it work better.

This is my kernel

[amilcar@localhost ~]$ uname -r
2.6.19-1.2895.fc6xen

maybe you will need to know this also....

[amilcar@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-xen-devel-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6
kernel-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6
kernel-devel-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6
kernel-xen-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6
kernel-xen-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6
kernel-headers-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6

You might not be able to use fglrx and if so you will be stuck with the regular alternative. I had a Radeon and could not use fglrx nor could I enable 3D or any other advanced feature. That said there are supposed to be ways. ATI themselves do offer Linux drivers but in my estimation they don't fully exploit the chips.

Yes, very similar. If you want to reproduce the error, you can opt to see extended error information in which there may be a specific complaint that X provides indicating why it can't start. Word is that FireGL may be compatible with Radeon chips etc, but it is also known to crash them occasionally. To get 3D you need hardware accelration and how you get that without fglrx I do not know. I switched to Nvidia, which I am aware you won't be able to do with a laptop. But keep trolling around, somebody out there has gotten 3D out of ATI.
