I believe that Red Hat defaults to Gnome, KDE may not even be installed.
Is your login screen the text login or the GUI login?
If it is the text, typing 'startx' (after logging in) will start the GUI unless it needs to be configured.
If it is the GUI login it will take you to the default desktop (after log in).

The KDE packages are on your RedHat 9 CDs.
In the menu, go to System Settings and click on Add/Remove Applications.

You can set the default desktop by editing /etc/sysconfig/desktop

Hi guys, I'm an italian professional *Windows* IT Consultant switching to Linux

I installed RedHat 9 yesterday in a VirtualMachine by VMWare... just in order to take a little confidence with the penguin before throwing Windows out thru the window...

I finally came into configuring VMware SVGA video & mouse driver in RH9... SUCCESS: "oh, happy daaAAaayyyy!" .

My (actual) problem: everytime i quit from my GUI (Gnome) to the prompt... i can't restart the GUI!

Typing "startx", as suggested above, takes me to a black screen with a white small "X" in the middle. There's no other activity, everytihing's hanged on. I suppose that's a sort of Xserver's splash screen, but Gnome doesn't start... I have to restart my VirtualMachine in order to re-login to the GUI.

Question: If I'm in the prompt, how can I start Gnome GUI?

Thanks to everyone, I'm happy to be here!
