need Help just installed Red Hat Linux 9 for the first time today...

ok this is the first time i have ever tried the linux operating system. I have it on a partition along with windows xp. my question is I am hearing all this talk about kde and gnome. How do i get into kde or Gnome on red hat linux? I have gotten into kde on mandrake 9 before i just typed in my user name and password in the dos like login screen then i typed in kde and it brought it up. but in red hat 9 it comes up a login screen and i dont have an option to get into kde or gnome or sawfish (?) can someone help me out here please. really appreciate it
thanks in advance!

I believe that Red Hat defaults to Gnome, KDE may not even be installed.
Is your login screen the text login or the GUI login?
If it is the text, typing 'startx' (after logging in) will start the GUI unless it needs to be configured.
If it is the GUI login it will take you to the default desktop (after log in).

The KDE packages are on your RedHat 9 CDs.
In the menu, go to System Settings and click on Add/Remove Applications.

You can set the default desktop by editing /etc/sysconfig/desktop

Hi guys, I'm an italian professional *Windows* IT Consultant switching to Linux :newbie:

I installed RedHat 9 yesterday in a VirtualMachine by VMWare... just in order to take a little confidence with the penguin before throwing Windows out thru the window... :D

I finally came into configuring VMware SVGA video & mouse driver in RH9... SUCCESS: "oh, happy daaAAaayyyy!" :p.

My (actual) problem: everytime i quit from my GUI (Gnome) to the prompt... i can't restart the GUI!

Typing "startx", as suggested above, takes me to a black screen with a white small "X" in the middle. There's no other activity, everytihing's hanged on. I suppose that's a sort of Xserver's splash screen, but Gnome doesn't start... I have to restart my VirtualMachine in order to re-login to the GUI.

Question: If I'm in the prompt, how can I start Gnome GUI?

Thanks to everyone, I'm happy to be here!
