need assistance getting soundcard driver installed

Alright, I recently installed RH( (Shrike) on to my FTP box, which formally was running XP.

The machine is a Dell OptiPlex GX1 (Full details and specs, including sound card please see here )

According to Hardware Browser, the Drivers currently being used are:

CS4232 for Game
CS4232 for MPU
ADL848 for WSS/SB

Since the Soundcard is a CS4236B, these, don't work (at least for audio output).

NOW

Since I am going to be using this as a DVD playback machine too, I have already downloaded and installed ALSA lib 0.9 which I need for the soundcard card. If I reading it right, according to here *, is all I need.

If you could please confirm that is info is correct, and then please explain what I need to do to get it properly installed and working, I would be extremely appreciative.

*Even though the site linked to appove (supposedly) gives "directions" on how to do it, It's not written in a way that I can make sense of it.

An alternative is to try the precompiled RPM packages at

http://freshrpms.net/docs/alsa/

Some people have reported success with these. I think there are three ALSA packages you need - the libraries, the kernel-modules (drivers) and the utilities.

Hi

Dell Optiplex GX1 PIII Slimline
RH 8.0 (Shrike)
Run sndconfig
Available at http://linux.maruhn.com/sec/sndconfig.html

I use the integrated Crystal Audio circuitry on these machines.
It records and plays ok.

Sndconfig updates modules.conf

Hope that helps

Regards

Chris
