I am planning to buy a PC that has just enough juice to power a virtual machine for a couple of months. So I'd rather go in for a high-end Pentium 4 than an entry level Dual-Core config.
Basically I need it to run some flavour of Linux and then will run VMWare for the virtual machine. I'd welcome any suggestion on the motherboard and processor combo.
Pentium 4 are slower than AMD K8 processors. Also they consume a lot of power and produce a lot of heat. You are better off buying an AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+ than a single core version. Of course can go with Intel Core 2 Duo processor but the motherboards are expensive.
The motherboard brands that I suggest are Abit and Gigabyte.
Buy at least 512 MB of RAM for VMware. More is better.
