NEC Multisync resolution/refresh rate problem.

This has been driving me insane.. i've never had so many problems with a monitor.

Here's my setup:

Pentium 4/1.6 Ghz
512MB PC2100 DDR
Radeon 9800 Pro
NEC Multisync 75

the problem i'm having is that the resolution is always 800x600 when i load the radeon driver.
If i load the SAME XF86CONFIG file and just change the driver from "fglrx" to "vesa" it loads 1280x1024 no problem. I don't think it's a problem with the ati driver because i had the same problem with the GeForce4 4200 i just replaced..

any ideas?
