Multimedia keys in linux

I have a keyboard with quite a few multimedia keys for media player, 2 eject buttons, volume control, sleep and some internet ones.
I'd like to get these keys working in linux but my main problem is that I can't find out what the keyboard model is. I've tried googling the serial number and have also looked on HP's website but I can't work out what it is.
The keyboard came with an HP AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ so I'm hoping anyone with the same comp might know more about it?
And has anyone had any success with multimedia keys in linux? I've installed a couple of apps, Lineak and another one, I forget it's name just now and I wouldn't mind finding a simple tutorial.
This is the only reasonable image I can find of the keyboard - http://www.geeks.com/imageshare/E/15...94AAR-unit.gif

You don't necessarily need to know what model the keyboard is; it's usually possible to detect what keypress signals the buttons send and work from there (assuming the keyboard driver detects the extra keys properly).

You basically have two options:

The easy option: install lineak and it's gui configuration tools. Use those to set up useful commands for the keyboard. Lineak is easy to use, but you'll have to live with a small daemon program running in the background all the time.

The slightly more complicated option: Configure xmodmap to recognize those buttons, as explained here. It's a bit more work to set up, but you don't have to have any external programs or such running.

There are a few more options out there, but most of them aren't worth your time, in my opinion. These two are enough to do the job. Note that you may not be able to set up the keys to do exactly the same things they did on Windows, but at least you'll be able to use them for something useful.

Xmodmap is the other app I had installed but hadn't got round to looking at it yet.
Thanks for the howtos, I'll have a look at them properly as soon as I get the time and see what works best (or doesn't work) for me.
I'm not fussed about most of the keys but I'd particularly like to get the eject keys for the cd and dvd working since my comp is in a funny position that makes them a bit awkward to get to and the volume keys for similar reasons.
The media player ones would be nice too but it's not that important and I'm not bothered about the internet keys at all.

<EDIT>
As it turns out, I've been messing about with the keyboard layouts in kde control centre and there are a few HP layouts preset. I've tried some of them and they either don't work at all or some of the keys work.
I've tried xmodmap and some of the keys are being recognised with xev and others aren't but I get the same results as with the keyboard layouts.
So I can get the multimedia keys to work except for record, which I'll probably not need anyway.
The volume up and down controls work but when I press mute, a box appears on the screen saying mute on but it doesn't actually mute the sound. I've tried adding the mute key in specific apps, such as kaffeine and amarok and it still doesn't mute sound.
Most of the other keys work but unfortunately, the ones I really wanted to work don't. I can't get the eject buttons to work, get any response or be detected by anything so that's a bit of a bummer.
