mothherboard change

i recently had to change mobos. Old one is asus with sis chipset. new one is asus with intel chipset. Processor is p4 3.2 ghz. memory is 1g.

since the change, I cannot run gnome, it fails to run.

also the system is VERY slow to boot up. before it was less than a minute, maybe less than 30 seconds. now it takes 5 minutes.

I am wondering how to improve things.

Any assistance appreciated.

Are you watching the system messages as it boots, and if so, is there a particular point at which things seem to pause for an unusually long time? My thinking is that one possibility is that the system is unnecessarily attempting to detect components that simply are not attached

thanks for the replies..!

interesting: i booted up from cd with knoppix. it also took ages to boot. after bootup it was also very slow. Next day, i tried knoppix again - this time it flew thru the bootup and fully loaded the GUI - KDE, i think.

So, i tried my HD (debian) and it booted up normally (quickly). but now I cannot run the UI (gnome). It is the xfree86 failing. I reconfigured using the i810 settings, as this is what was successful with knoppix. still fails. tried apt-get remove --purge of xfree86 & re-installed. still cannot load the UI.

There is a point in the error messages where xfree86 seems to still be looking for SIS drivers/modules whatever.

Any advice. I am almost there, and would like to get my UI working and get back to work on the damn thing.
??Help!!

why haven't you posted the exact error messages you are getting?? it would make it so much easier for people to help you... error messages are the bread and butter of troubleshooting... and BTW, we still don't know which part of your startup process is taking longer than usual...

okay...

by trial and error, i've gotten gnome back up, but only in fail-safe mode.
what did i do? I uninstalled X, Gnome, more...
re-installed.
At least i can run. Anyhow, what's the next step?
I cannot run normally, just in fail-safe mode.

If /var/log/messages, X11 logs, and your /home directory lives
on the same partition where /var is located, then you need to
clear these log files. In place of driver in /etc/X11/XF86Config
or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 use vesa. That should fix the error
message that says can not find device. Also including
Option "VideoRam" "65536" in the device section where you
specify vesa as the driver will help fixed the video RAM to
64 MB assuming your graphics can handle that capacity and
you have equal to or more than 128 MB of RAM.

BTW, next time or now please use ub code in this forum.
This means use either the quote or code tags. This makes
it easier for me and others to read this post instead of
being annoyed of scrolling to Timbuktu.

NOTE: I manually formated this post so no scrolling
is needed.
