Moniter Resolution

I have an old moniter that I am trying to get to work with Mandrake 9.2. I set it to the lowest setting of 256 and 640x480 but it still doesn't display correctly (Almost unreadable) It used to work with 16 colors but I can't even see enough to get into KDE let alone configure it. So, is there a way to configure resolution from terminal. I just installed Linux so I don't know almost anything about it.
