Unhappy modem problems

Hi I am new to this forum as well as to Linux. I just switched from
Microsoft to Ubuntu recently and I have a i386 system.
My modem is a 56K WinLucent and I used it strictly for faxing purposes.
I connect to the net through a DSL cable modem ethernet connection.
The interface eth0 is active.
For some reason the 56K modem is not active since I installed Ubuntu_linux. The interface pp0 is not active. The operating system is unable to autodetect the modem.
thanks

Reason is it is a winmodem. There is some support for winmodems out there. Search here or at google for your modem. Do a lspci to see more info on the card and search for that.

thanks for reply

thanks Brian. I suspected as much. What's an lspci?
I am going to do a search to see if there is support for the card. If not, I guess, I'll just have to get a new card.

Sorry for the delay out of town. lspci is a command to display the info on pci devices in your machine.

Hi Brian, thanks for your reply. I found a good site to brush up on Linux command lines and how the OS works. I have a bit of a learning curve ahead of me.
thanks again
