Mobility Radeon 7500 + ATI drivers 3.7.6 -> X 4.3 down...

Yes, you are right. I'm a dumbass...

I've installed the latest ATI drivers (that are not compatible with my Mobility Radeon 7500...) and now I only got the console...
Now my question is: How can I make the system using the old drivers again (Radeon LW, I think)?

I got a Knoppix and I'm able to use the console (even vi, if it has to be

).
There are no errors during startup. If I try to start X manually I get:

Code:

(EE) No devices detected

Fatal server error:
no screens found

BTW: I'm using SuSE Linux 9.0 with the latest patches on an IBM TP T41.
SuSE system diagnostics says everything is fine.

first I would take a look at your X configuration and make sure it is using the correct video card driver, you could also look at the log messages and anything with an EE is an error that might help you. the logs are kept in /var/log I can't remember the exact place cause I'm not at my machine.

I think I'm getting the revenge now that I use YaST to do all the configurations...
Which is the file that configures X? Is it possible that the old config-file is still around?

It looks like I need a little more help

I'm just back from a command line session. In /etc/X11, there's XFree86-4.old what is the backup ati made from my old configuration (as far as I can tell). I renamed that to XFree86-4 (after backing up the ati configuration...) and made the system reboot. But unfortunately it doesn't help

I also took a look at the logfiles, but they don't tell more than what I wrote in my first post (as far as I can tell, did I miss the right file?).

Does anyone know what I have to change besides this script to get the old configuration back?
Or is there even a way to let YaST do the job without the graphical tools?

Just wanted to let you know that it's *solved* now!
The problem was that overwriting 'XFree86-4' with the defaults wasn't enough, I had to remove it. After I did that the system used 'XFree86', which still contained the correct settings (the same as XFree86-4.old).
My guess is that the '4' gives the file higher proirity, but yast only checks for 'XFree86'. So when I just overwrote the ATI file, X started but YaST gave wrong info and crashed!
Now everything's back to normal

And the rpm uninstalled.
Who needs OpenGL anyway

We have the same problem. However, I'm afraid that we will be stuck with the "radeon" driver for now which seems to me to have been based from the DRI project. I dont think it is the proprietary ATI driver since ATI doesn't support the Mobility 7500 for Linux anymore.

Though the M7500 will allow Xgl to work, it is just but partial. When you try to maximize your window under Xgl on M7500, it wont maximize no matter what you do. Some glitches are just annoying.
