Mint 17.1 repeatedly crashes.....graphics card?

Mint 17.1 only runs in fallback mode....I believe it is due to my graphics card but it has been a while since I have studied up on my computer hardware knowledge, can somebody give me some pointers?

Hi...

Welcome to the forum

Please restart the system and fater it gets done booting up (and after crashing and switches into fallback mode,) please open a terminal and post the results of this command...

Code:
dmesg
Hopefully, that will give us an idea of what's going on.

Regards...

Thank you ardvark71.....but now I have another problem, terminal will not open, ctrl alt t does absolutely nothing. Could the terminal issue be because I am running mint from a usb?

That's the other thing ondoho, I don't have a menu, toolbar is there but no menu. I played with the resolution this morning then all of a sudden when I right-click on the desktop, I get a drop down with the option to open terminal. But still no menu

Sparky 04,

There is no need to buy another graphics card.

All you need to do is install the MATE (or Xfce) version of Linux Mint 17.1.

Open a Terminal and then type:

Code:
sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate
See this link for further details:

Sparky_04,

MATE's layout/look is more like Cinnamon.

Personally I would go for MATE but the choice of Desktop Environment is up to you.

Mint Xfce screenshots:

while this is certainly good advice, i doubt it will fix "repeated crashes".

dear original poster, could you describe those crashes in as much detail as possible?

As soon as I login and get to the desktop I get a pop-up saying that Cinnamon has crashed and I am now running in fallback mode would I like to restart Cinnamon. If I click yes it goes away for 2-3 seconds and it pops back up, if I click no I can go about my business doing whatever, but of course this doesn't solve anything.

Sparky_04,

If you cannot access Terminal, then backup any personal data and then do a fresh install of Linux Mint MATE (or Xfce).
