M3A79-T Deluxe

I just got an Asus M3A79-T Deluxe motherboard, and while my trusty slackware install boots up fine, the ide hard drive it is on is realy slow:
/dev/hda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.11 seconds =1120.07 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 46.92 seconds = 1.36 MB/sec
the sata drive I store suff on is:
/dev/sda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.12 seconds =1100.60 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.09 seconds = 58.57 MB/sec.
Lspci gives me this:

I compile my own kernel with slackware on my desktop (my laptops run ubuntu); what do I need to compile into my kernel to improve this?
Also, I've tried the Ad1889 driver for the audio (adi2000b device) and that hasn't worked yet.
Thanks in advance for your help.
