indeed, don't be afraid of buying an HP printer, most HP's have good support on Linux (in general). In fact it does not matter if you use RH9 or Slack10 or Gentoo or... Just use the PPD from linuxprinting.org
You can actually get the ppd's and the latest version
of hpijs directly from HP's website. The only problem
I have with my HP is printing through GIMP. It seems
that GIMP requires you to use the gimp-print plugin,
which only delivers 600 dpi for my printer, where
the hpijs driver from HP gives 2400 x 1200, just like
in Windoze. In fact, this lack of ability to print good
photos with GIMP is one of only three reasons I still
have to use Windoze.

Indeed this is a problem, but the aswer is very simple. I just use gimp to edit images and use another viewer to print it (e.g.KView). The fact is that kprinter is a good printing dialog and I use it as much as possible.

Thanks for the tip. It does print that way, but I don't
think the quality is nearly what one gets from "the
darkside." I will check to find out, though.
What do you mean with "he quality is nearly what one gets from "the
darkside"? It shouldn't be much of a difference if you open an image using the gimp or using one of the kde utilities (kdegraphics, am I right?).

The quality of the print. Will post results later.
