Linux freezes and cannot do anything

Hi

I have a strange problem. My Mandrake 8.1 with kernel 2.4 will just completely freeze. I cannot do anything with the mouse or keyboard. My only option is the hit the reset button. - very frustrating. I have checked the logs, but there is no record of anything strange. It will freeze up like after about 2-3 hours of use.

I have enough RAM and disk space.

Any ideas?

Regards
Shelton.

If your system works normally for 2 or 3 hours before locking up, I'd check to see if it's overheating (which is nearly guaranteed to create instability). Is the CPU fan freely spinning, and likewise are the case fans spinning (and not obstructed)? -- J.W.

Hi

Funny enough I am now up and running for 7 hours and all is OK - I believe it is Mozilla thats causing the problem - I have not used it and everytime I do, I get that problem mentioned.

Thanks for your comments

Regards
Shelton.

Hi,

seriously, please do consider to check the kernel version,
2.4.27 or 2.6.10-rc1 is fine, i think.

and more,
do check wget, zlib, iptables, ....

if you can, how about mandrake 10, slackware current, fedora 3?
i think all is fine for you. no phrozen.
