k error 80, AX=4281 drive 9F

Hi,

Had a lot of computer trouble recently and had to have my hard drive wiped and Windows re-installed by a repair shop. They put in the Home Edition of XP.

Now I immediately want to install Linux again. However, when I try to load the Mint live cd I get the above information.

When I try to load the PclinuxOS live cd I get 'log in Local Host' and I don't know where to go from there.

When I try to load the Suse live cd I get nothing.

At the start of my troubles I got 'file kbdclass.sys is corrupted'. This hasn't returned.

I'd appreciate some help here, please.

That's easy...take the box back to the shop, tell them to either remove the crap they put on your drive, or give you a new one. You're paying for the service, it's up to them to make you, the customer, happy.

On another note, could be a master/slave drive setting, loose cable, etc., if you had them monkey with it. Check those settings, and the drive settings in BIOS too. And if everything's ok there, take it back to them, and let them deal with it. They were supposed to fix it, and didn't, and the machine won't work the way you want it to now

TBone,

I followed your advice and took the machine back. The mechanic was brought out to the shop front and immediately said 'It's your optical drive. I had to hook up a spare one to load Windows'

Now you'd think that this should have been communicated to me wouldn't you? Anyway I've cleaned to dvd player head and all is well.

Thanks again for your advice.

Betula
