ipod, 1394, pcmia

hi. i am a new linux user. i am trying to mount my ipod so that i can use gtkpod. ipod uses firewire, and i have both a cardslot with 2 firewireports and a 1394 port. i am not sure either the pcmia or 1394 is being recognized... when i run cardmgr i get the following errors:

cardmgr[3402]: open_sock(socket 0) failed: Device or resource busy
cardmgr[3402]: another cardmgr is already running?

when i run the command lsmod to see what devices i have it gives me this:

does anyone know what steps i should take to get my ipod recognized when i plug it in? i know something is happening because when i plug it into the cardbus the ipod turns on, but that's it. all the websites i read about ipods and linux say the ipod should auto-mount. what am i doing wrong? thanks...

Hi.

The iPod probably won't automount. Plug it in, and then run 'dmesg' and post the last, say, 10 lines.

Hmmm. I'm not seeing anything interesting there.

Could you boot your (I assume laptop) with the cardbus card out, then plug in the card, and repost the last few lines of dmesg?
I'm not sure your pcmcia card is being recognised.

Sure thing... I rebooted w/out the card then inserted and nothing significant changes in dmesg:

Linux Kernel Card Services
options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]
Yenta: CardBus bridge found at 0000:02:04.0 [1028:0149]
Yenta: ISA IRQ mask 0x0000, PCI irq 10

cs: IO port probe 0x0100-0x04ff: excluding 0x200-0x20f 0x4d0-0x4d7
cs: IO port probe 0x0a00-0x0aff: clean.
lp: driver loaded but no devices found
agpgart: Found an AGP 2.0 compliant device at 0000:00:00.0.
agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 1x mode
agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:01:00.0 into 1x mode
drivers/usb/input/hid-input.c: event field not found
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1f.5 to 64
MC'97 1 converters and GPIO not ready (0xff00)
intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 49600 usecs
intel8x0: clocking to 48000

So I assume you are implying that would be an issue with my 1394 card. I edited the kernel configuration to support PCMIA and such, so it should work. Is there any hope? I'm attempting to use a standard/generic no-name 2 port PCI to firewire card. Thanks for the help...

So I removed the card and inserted it, then removed it again, and dmesg returned the following:

intel8x0: clocking to 48000
PCMCIA: socket 0355f42c: *** DANGER *** unable to remove socket power
PCMCIA: socket 0355f42c: *** DANGER *** unable to remove socket power

So something is going on right?

Have you compiled IEEE1394 support in your kernel - I didn't see that module listed in your first post.

If it was compiled, try doing 'modprobe ieee1394' to load it.

Thanks for the help everyone... I just caved in and bought the USB adapter for 15 bucks; works great now. I think it was just a non-compliant pci card. Thanks again!
