Installing a Distro VIA USB?

I was wondering if there was a way to get an .iso onto a usb, put it into a laptop, then run the .iso to install the Distro onto the laptop. I don't think it should matter either way. I'm asking this because I'm particularly interested in an Eee PC and wanted to avoid buying an external CD drive for the sole purpose of booting a distro onto it.

Any help is appreciated.

Ya its possible. e.g. it appears that Debian can be installed onto a USB stick or an SD card if you follow these instructions: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowTo/Install
