Hi,
I have a HP deskjet D1660 printer installed on Ubuntu 10.10. The printer started printing black text as a muddy brown colour, went through process of cleaning black cartridge, eventually installed new black cartridge but still had problem. Found that Windows was printing all docs fine with no problems so I deleted the printer in Ubuntu and re-installed it. Now it will not print anything, I installed hp-toolbox and printed a test page but this printed black as muddy brown (original problem).
I am now stuck I would like to stop and then re-start the print spooler but I don't know how to do this in Ubuntu, any help or further advice on this problem would be gratefully received.
Yes the system is using CUPS, tried to use it to re-install the printer, no joy and after the installation the printer was not recognised by hp-toolbox.
As far as I can tell the driver is version 3.10.2.
I managed to get the printer working again using the hp-toolbox, all went well and the printer now prints again but black is still being printed as muddy brown. also when I select another font colour for example red, it prints correctly!
I am really stuck here so any further help is much appreciated.

The only other thought I have, is, the ink source. Is the ink from HP or some other source?

Did you try to setup the printer to black/white only in CUPS by reconfiguring the printer settings? For me it sounds like your black is a mixed by C/M/Y.
