I have spent a few hours on this, trying various combinations of instructions. The nearest I got was when I followed the instructions from the HPLIP site, but it ended up with telling me some dependencies were not installed. I installed them using the Mintinstall tool, but still no go.
Before I spend any more time on this, I would like to know if there is a user out there who has got this particular printer to run on the Mint 7 distribution? If somebody has, then I know it is at least possible, and I will persevere!
On my system, there are 3 choices of driver for the "D1600 series". I expect that these will work for the 1660.
First, make sure that hplip is installed on your system (check with the package manager). Next, I recommend always using the CUPS browser interface......in any browser, enter "localhost:631". With your printer turned on, select "add printer" and it should be detected automatically. If not, you can still go thru the steps and see what driver is offered.
HP "officially" supports Linux, and I would **definitely** persevere.

No, the last on mine doesn't contain the D1600 series. By 'mine' I mean what comes up in the list when I choose the 'Printer' tab in CUPS. As I say, this was why I am keen to find somebody with Mint 7 who is up and running with this printer. I could spend forever in trial and error otherwise.

It is not a question of what distro you are using----as long as you have a recent version of CUPS.
Did you check to be sure HPLIP is installed? I believe that is where you will get the drivers.
You can also install gutenprint (if it is not already there), but I would try the HP drivers first.
I went through the same process with the same printer and Mint 7. No go. I know this does not help you but at least you know another has failed. Fortunately, I multiboot and hplip drivers were no problem in other distros. This printer does work well.
The problem is updating hplip to obtain D1600 support.
There is no reason that CUPS and HPLIP will not work on Mint----or any other distro.
And yet, as you can see with the comment from another Mint 7 User above, it ain't quite so simple. For info, the version of HPLIP which is installed in Mint 7's normal set-up does not contain whatever is necessary for the D1600 series to work. This is confirmed on the HP official site, which gives a link to another download from the HPLIP site; I downloaded this and tried to install it to the best of my ability but it didn't work. This is why I want to find somebody who has actually got this printer to work on Mint 7. I am not a programmer; I like this distro and am now Windows-free apart from the need to use it to print documents. I have neither the ability nor the inclination to learn all about package dependencies etc, which is why using the Synaptic package manager in Mint 7 is fine for me. Once I have to start opening terminal windows I feel deflated. Sorry, but there it is.
It's all very well saying "CUPS will do it", but again as I said above the D1600 series did not come up on the list of printers offered when I tried to do it using the instructions kindly provided above.
I am sure I will get there in the end, but it is frustrating !
