Hi,
I have an HP 3322 usb printer installed and using CUPS. The problem is that it has suddenly stopped printing. It is listed in YaST hardware and the KDE Control Module. However, the Control Module shows it to be stopped. Here's the thing: I click on the start option and it shows "idle (accepting jobs)" for about three seconds and then reverts to "stopped (not accepting jobs)."
I have reinstalled the printer a couple of times but with the same results. Any suggestions? And, by the way, I'm very new to Linux so please respond in detail. Thanks!
OS Linux SuSE 9.3

Go into cups web management and check the status there. It may need to be started by cups. It may also have some previously stopped print jobs hanging around. Open Konqueror and put into the address bar localhost:631
If it's anything like my HP3520 you might try unplugging the power for a while.
Thanks for the reply! localhost:631 says "Unable to open USB device "usb://hp/deskjet%203320?serial=LPDTESTLD": No such device"
Now, I cannot log into localhost:631 because it rejects my username / password. But I did get the above message. How do I proceed from here? Thanks again.
Which username+password did you use? I always have to use root's. According to the error the device does not exist. Is the printer powered on? You might also check dmesg for information. See if there's any mention of the printer being detected. There's a number of other possibilities: kernel's USB detection, physical printer problem, USB port or cable going bad. Try another USB port, then if you have extra printers or cables try them.
Thanks again. The printer shows up everywhere I've checked but still doesn't work. Something I'm doing / not doing, I'm sure. The odd thing is that it has been working fine and just quit w/o my changing anything on the system. I tried switching usb ports with the same result. I think I'll do as you suggested earlier and just unplug it for a day or so. I've still got a lot to learn about Linux and I sure appreciate your help as well as the help of others on this forum.
If the 3320 is one of the plain, white printers with only a power button like I'm thinking, unplugging the power is just to clear the printer's memory of stalled print jobs. As for the cups thing, hmmm... unless it's a cups.conf problem. You might be able to edit that file and comment the entry for this printer and see if it'll let you in.
Good luck. Printers are tricky in linux because there aren't a lot of utilites, especially nothing vendor specific, like the Window$ progrms for Epson, HP and Lexmark.
