You will need to talk to your ISP. There are different things various ISP's need to see from your end. Find out what they are.

If you have a Lan port, that will connect to your system. It is probably a ethernet port. Have a look in the documentation that came with the modem. It may be a pdf file on a CD. There should be information in the doc on how to talk from your system to the modem.

I just installed a SpeedTouch modem. I was surprised to find out this "modem" has a DHCP server plus a load of other features that I would not associate with a modem.

Your ISP may say, we don't 'support' linux. This is a pile of ( @#$% ). Facts, linux will work with most any DSL providing ISP. What I did was use a XP system to follow the ISP's instructions. Once I had the sign on information; User ID and Password; I put my router in place. I put the log on stuff in the router, presto, I'm in, and all my other systems in the house work.

If you are only connecting one system and are not going to use a router, then you probably will need to install PPPoE ( or PPPoA depending where in the world you are ) on your system. It will do the same things windoze does for a single system.

Post back any specific questions you may have.

PPPoE should be available through your package manager. What distro?

I have not used it myself. Here is a link to get you going.

I found this with a google search. I'm sure there are more like this one.
