How to I check a Linux formated hard drive for bad sectors

I need help with a computer running Linux Redhat 8.0. I hear a lot of clicking coming from the HDD "ping of death " like sounds. Is there a tool I can run from a boot floppy that will recognize the drive and scan it for bad sectors. obliviously if I use to a win98 boot floppy and run scandisk it only recognizes and scans the "a" drive. It loads grub and gets as far as asking me for an aldo login. Thank you in advance for any help.

You can do a shutdown -Fr now which will reboot and do a disc scan on start up. Or you can use a live CD like Knoppix.
