How can I choose and buy a digital camera?

I use Debian 7 and I have been contemplating the purchase of a digital camera for some time, can anyone make suggestions of what to buy and how to transfer pictures from the camera to the laptop in view of printing them? I anticipate Debian will have such software in the distro, if required or could I use a USB SSD/card that will fit both the camera and on my laptop's usb3?

All I want is something simple so I can use the photos as proof of something and it seems the quality of photos taken with a mobile phone (lost since) were quite good enough if that is an indication of what I need, although a printed page of such photos could be disappointing due to the size of the screen and the resolution of a mobile phone.

Your comments and advices are most appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Almost any digital compact will do what you want, if it uses a SDHC card & you have an SDHC socket on your computer you can just use the card to transfer your pictures. (Only proviso is to use the cameras formatting option on the card.) If you don't have an SDHC socket you can buy a USB converter, where you plug your SDHC card into before inserting it into a USB socket.

(Debian has plenty of options for sorting your pictures, Shotwell being one of them.)
EDIT: Corrected - shotwell is for stills openshot is for video, sorry.
