I just bought a Brother Mfc-8890 in short I hate it. It will print one page of a thirty page document than stop. It is also constantly printing strange error messages. I need the name of a good linux compatible printer to trade this one for.
You might try the Brother MFC-9840CDW. I've been using mine since January and haven't had any problems, except that I have to connect it via USB if I want to scan with Linux. Mac and Windows are capable of scanning over a network.
HP, with their HPLIP project, has the largest number of well supported all-in-one machines. If you are going to print in any volume, you might consider a laser printer all-in-one, more of them may have a driver for linux.
I was able to get the printer mostly working. When I was comparing the Brother MFC-8890DW to the HP LaserJet HP m1522nf I realized HP and Brother list the same standards for the two printers. The Brother works great with the HP driver. Duplex printing across my network even works. I do not have an option to print from tray two because the HP is only a one tray printer. I would call this multi function a best buy.
