Tell me what printer/scanner multifunction to get!

Hi. It's come a time where I need to get a printer. My only OS is SuSE..so I need a printer/scanner combo that will work easily, and work fully (for printing and scanning). I have reviewed linuxprinting.com, and am still nervous to buy one with out absolutely knowing it will work on linux.

If you have, or used an hp (preferably) printer/scanner multifunction, that worked on linux fully, please tell me. I need to know which one I should buy!

I use a HP PSC 2510 (European version of the HP PSC 2500)
This has its own network print server built in and prints, and scans over the network, I can even use the photo card reader as well. HP stuff is generally well supported in Linux.
If you are using USB to connect, you will probably find it even easier.
Hope this helps,

Just another possible suggestion, I am using a Lexmark X73 without a problem on linux right now.

I have had no problems, though I haven't printed photos yet (haven't had a need)

Ok. I want to get the HP PSC 1610. I looked on the hp site, and it is fully supported. However, our walmart only has an hp psc 1610v. Is there a difference? Will this cause problems.

Help apreciated.

Thanks.

Hi RoaCh

I've just bought a HP PSC-2355p.
It needs some effort to install the HP drivers, but works fine.
Looks like it uses the driver for the 2350, so the extra 5 and p are minor variations.
Scanning with XSane is plug'n'play

I was going for the 1610, but then I checked out the ink cartridge prices. Turns out, at least for me, that cartridges for the 2355 are cheaper (!) than those for the 1610 (and yes, that is price per ml). This is especially good given that the 2355 is a higher spec'ed machine! Something to keep in mind.

Another quick point: HP specify only up to 90gsm for paper other than HP. However, I use a good quality 100gsm (own brand from an office supplies company) and it runs through just fine.

Looking at www.linuxprinting.org, I think HP's HPLIP software drives just about all of their current printers. During install a whole load of HP printer names flashed across the screen.

HTH
Al
