Help on the transition from P4 to Core 2 Duo

Hey, as the name implies, I'm about to upgrade from a P4 to Core 2 Duo (6600). Will Slackware 11.0 be able to work enough for me to recompile the kernel? Or should I recompile the kernel just before I upgrade my computer?

I plan on using the 2.6.20.3 kernel.

Also, as a related thought, I've been told to switch from ResierFS to ext3 FS. I am getting a new hard drive, how can I transfer all the data from my old Hard drive to the new HD? Here is my current Hard drive partitions, and how I'd like the new one setup:

hda:
~80GB NTFS (Windows)

hdb:
~30GB NTFS (Extra Windows space)
~1GB VFAT ("Exchange" between Linux and Windows)
~49GB ReiserFS (Linux's)

new config:
100GB NTFS
300GB (a good file system to keep media that both Linux and Windows can rw)
100GB ext3 or ReiserFS (whichever is objectively better)

Thanks a lot,

David
