help cracking/boiling soup sound coming from sound card

Ive recently installed madriva 2006 and everything seems to be going fine other than a constant crackling/boiling soup sound coming from the sound card when in mandriva. My audio setup runs fine in windows and I am at a loss to explain why I cannot get any other sound in mandriva other than this cosntant crackling/boiling soup noise!

Im using an EMU10K2 Audigy Audio Processor with the driver ‎snd-emu10k1 module, setup by default when mandriva installed.

Ive used the alsamixer command in the terminal to make sure im running analog and not digital out etc but to no avail.

Any ideas?
Thanks

This is not going to be of too much help but anyway.
I had the same problem with my card (not the same as yours). I tried everything: muting the mic, etc. The crackling sound did not disappear. What I finally did was to build the newest kernel (2.6.15.1) and installed the newest version of alsa (I think it is up to 1.0.10 now). The alsa guys fixed the driver. Now if anyone would give me a clue on how to enable 4.1 sound ... Try it---it is a pain, but so is everything regarding hardware in Linux. The rewards are worth it, though.
