sounds as if your harddisk is damaged, try checking it with smartctl from the smartmontools package or some checking tools from your disk vendor (see www.ultimatebootcd.com for a nice boot cd with tons of tools)

hey doc,
thnks for the reply.. i ll try with smartctl. this problem came frm nowhere. i just changed my partitions with fdisk. did that screw my hdd? isnt it possible to recover ... i mean can i remove those bad sectors and work with others?

sorry, don't know... maybe smartctl shows no physical errors, then there may be hope
