You can try running (as root)
At least you'll know if it a system or diskdrake problem.
You may also crate a partition directly with fdisk, since the disk is empty you don't face any risk!

You will have to specify a mountpoint, either by manually editing /etc/fstab or maybe via diskdrake (It's been a while since I last used mdk: too messy.)
