well I heard that the latest videocards aren't supported yet... and I wasn't sure about the release date of the videocard so

btw, doesn't it matter that it's a videocard from [i]Asus[i] and not nVidia?

The manufacturer makes little difference.

The only video card issues I have seen with nVidia is when the system can't identify the card when X fires up. (usually as you stated because the card is too new.. )

Usually that problem is easily fixed by updating the pci.ids file on your system from here: http://pciids.sourceforge.net/ You would download the file and place it in /usr/share/misc/

Note that I connect the card using the APG port and not the PCI one. So I think if I experience a problem, the PCI lib won't help, correct?

Anyway, I've bought the card and I'm gonig to install it tomorrow. I'll post results here.

AGP cards are still listed when you list PCI Devices..

so this list DOES affect AGP cards.

Ok. I changed my old videocard for the new one. However, linux doensn't seem to know that I changed it (for example: rightclick>Configure Desktop>Display doesn't give me the possibility for a higher resolution). Do I need to download a driver or something?

skim the output of your xserver log. /var/log/Xorg.0.log
You should see the section where the card is scanned and detected and available modes are listed.

I don't know what your previous card was.. was it nVidia also ?
if not did you install the nVidia proprietary drivers ?

You can edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to add in higher resolutions you would like to use, or your distro may have a config tool you can use to do that.

Hi,

in my XORG file I stil got this:

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "nv"
        VendorName "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 4 (generic)"
EndSection
Do I need to change it?

You are running the Open Source driver for your video card..

You can if you want install the proprietary driver to get more function / features from your card if you like.
