ftdi serial to usb converter

Has anyone had any luck using the ftdi serial to usb converter? I am trying to hook up a modem but the server will not see it. When I plug it in a /dev/ttyUSB0 shows up and an lsusb gives me the following:
Bus 001 Device 010: ID 0403:6001 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd 8-bit FIFO
When I go into YAST to configure modem (US Robotics) it doesn't see it or light up the lights like it is trying to communicate with it. I am running Linux version 2.6.5-7.244-smp (SLES 9). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, lsmod|grep ftdi gives me this:
ftdi_sio 48644 0
usbserial 51192 1 ftdi_sio
usbcore 141432 7 hid,ftdi_sio,usbserial,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd
Thanks.

Hi there,

I have three of these which use the FT232 chips and they work just fine.

Two suggestions...

(1) Make sure you are referring to the correct tty port. It will appear as something like /dev/usb/ttyUSBnn depending on how udev is configured. If you have only a single USB -> serial converter present at the time then it's more straightforward!

(2) Check the permissions on the tty port; you will need rw access.

Cheers, Steve
