Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

flashrom EEPROM/flash device found

I'm trying to learn about reflashing bios and eventually play with coreboot on some old machines I have lying around.

Every machine I try to run flashrom on I get

Quote:
flashrom v0.9.2-r1001 on Linux 2.6.35-gentoo-r12 (i686), built with libpci 3.1.4, GCC 4.4.4
flashrom is free software, get the source code at http://www.flashrom.org

No coreboot table found.
Found chipset "VIA VT82C686A/B", enabling flash write... OK.
This chipset supports the following protocols: Non-SPI.
Calibrating delay loop... OK.
No EEPROM/flash device found.
Note: flashrom can never write if the flash chip isn't found automatically.
I have tested this board by reflashing a spare chip using dos and aflash utility successfully but cant get flashrom to even read the rom chip.

I also have a nvidia graphics card which gives similar results

Quote:
Detected NVIDIA I/O base address: 0xf8300000.
Calibrating delay loop... OK.
No EEPROM/flash device found.
Note: flashrom can never write if the flash chip isn't found automatically.
The graphics card would be useful as a portable flash writer but I would just like to get something to reflash on some hardware I have..

"Note: flashrom can never write if the flash chip isn't found automatically. "

"Supports more than 261 flash chips, 152 chipsets, 259 mainboards, 43 PCI devices, 5 USB devices and various parallel/serial port-based programmers. "

http://www.flashrom.org/Supported_hardware shows it as unknown to work. Since you have tested then I'd say it can't work on that for some reason.

Shame its not supported as this is the only motherboard I have with socketed bios chip.
Looks like I will need to de-solder some of the others so I can swap chips.
