fdisk unable to read hard drive

A few weeks ago I got a virus on my computer. I think it could have nuked my MBR.

When i try to boot I get the error message.. error loading operating system. Which appears even before I come to the menu to choose between loading linux and windows.

So I tried to boot using the linux cd as a spring board, it gets to a certain point and then I get something like...

kernel panic
unable to mount fs

So then i tried to use fdisk on it and I get the message...

unable to read disk

Sooooo, then i used the windows cd and tried to format it and i get pretty much the same error message. I also tried to use the fixmbr and it appears to do nothing and I tried to use fixboot and I get the same message as when i try formatting it.

I dont care about the data on the disk anymore. All i want to do is format it so i can install linux again. Does anyone have any idea how i can format it?

cheers scottie

You should be able to use fdisk as if the hard drive is a brand new drive that has never been partitioned. Run fdisk and begin creating partitions without trying to read what is already there.
