I have tried to install Fredora Core 4 on my new dell D610 with the Intel 915GM (1400x1050) graphics card. But when I’m booting the system, the only ting I can see is a black screen. But I can switch to an external monitor by using Fn + CRT/LCD and then get the picture on my external monitor. After that I can switch back to the laptop screen, and everything’s fine.
I have tried to look for some solution for this problem at the web, but can’t find any answers. I hope somebody can help me.
I'm not familiar with Dell , but in your Bios try increasing the Graphic or Video memory Size depending what you have. You should have a couple options, maybe 4,6 and 8 MB's, and i don't know if you have some options for your screen or not, but make sure that the laptops lcd screen set to be used, instead the CRT screen.
Good luck with it.
Pleeeaaaase, get back if/when you solve this problem... I also have Fedore Core 4 on D610, and are struggling with the exact same problem. I am a Linux newbie, and do not have a clue where to begin fixing this
1) I updated the kernel, 2) installed the i915 driver, 3) corrected the '/dev/mouse' path to 'dev/input/mice' in the config file and then 4) copied the config file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
After that I could finally get my first glance at the graphical user interface.
I wish I had done 3) and 4) first ... maybe that alone would have done the trick.
I've also a black screen after installing Fedora Core on a laptop Dell Latitude D610.
It also destroy my lilo boot loader for my knoppix 8.0 with the grub loader my windows 2K staying alive...
I restart on the fedora black screen and open a text session CTRL ALT F2
I edit the grub loader : /boot/grub/grub.conf and modify the knoppix session as this :

I got sound working by enabling external amplifier:
Open your volume control and select Edit -> Preferences. Click the checkbox in front of 'External Amplifier' and close the window. Select the new tab named 'Switches' which is now appearing in the volume control and check the 'External Amplifier' box again.
