I did an upgrade from FC3 to FC4. I've set it up so that after boot up it goes to the command line (not the GUI). Then I bring up GNOME gui. Now however with FC4, when I logout of the gui desktop, the screen goes black and stays black (it does not go back to the command line).
(A "feature" in newer Fedora releases [both FC4 and FC3] is to suppress the display of messages [i.e., a "black screen"] during some shutdowns, mostly ones with no error messages. My suspicion is that you've set your GNOME to automatically shutdown or restart on shutdown, and something is "hanging.")

What logout options have you set in GNOME?

In FC3 had not not set any specific logout options, just the defaults. Things must have changed with the FC4 upgrade .I've got the machine at home, I'll try it tonight.
well I tried the Ctrl Alt F1, but same thing, it goes to black. I googled this problem last night for almost two hours, no luck on a solution yet.
I reviewed the gdm.conf and nothing stands out to me in there. Does anyone know which config file controls the fact that a black/blank screen comes up after Logout of GNOME (if that is even intended).
Also, eventhough I am logged in as root, there is no shutdown or restart option anymore in GNOME fo me.
I did read that this was a problem in FC4 test version early this year.
This is a glitch in FC4 and a bug report has been generated already.
I had this problem and did some researching and found that it is caused by the following file:
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
